ELLSWORTH — Filmmaker Roman Doux grew up in Switzerland’s city of Bern, whose name is derived from the old Germanic word for bear (baren), where live brown bears have been a major tourist attraction for hundreds of years. So, it’s no surprise that Doux has been fascinated by the creatures since childhood.
That lifelong interest undoubtedly inspired the Swiss author-producer, who possesses a master’s degree in geography, geology and environmental studies, to accompany and document Swiss wildlife biologist David Bittner, who has studied Alaska’s Kodiak and coastal wild brown bear population for nearly 20 years. Bittner’s quest to understand and ultimately protect the formidable creatures that can grow as tall as 10 feet and weigh up to 1,800 pounds is the focus of “Bear-Like.” The 55-minute 2019 film is among the standout offerings at the 2021-22 Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at The Grand in Ellsworth. Co-sponsored by The Grand and The Ellsworth American, the festival continues at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6.
Ellsworth is among 550 communities screening the 2021-22 World Tour’s featured films from the 46th annual Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival (BCMFF). In years past, the festival’s programming included a culture-themed evening, a high-adrenaline sport-themed evening and a “Best of” film picks afternoon. This year, due to reduced staffing at the Banff Mountain Film Festival office, each evening’s program will include a mix of sports, culture and award-winning films.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival showcases the world’s best adventure filmmakers and explorers as they push themselves to the limits in the most remote and stunning corners of the globe. Witness epic human-powered feats, life-affirming challenges and mind-blowing cinematography — all on the big screen.
Vancouver, British Columbia, director Cassie De Colling’s “Precious Leader Woman” is another compelling documentary that stands out. Released in 2021, “Precious Leader Woman” documents the odyssey of two-time world champion snowboarder Spencer O’Brien and her journey from her childhood in the remote village of Alert Bay, the athlete’s battle with rheumatoid arthritis and exploration of her Haida and Kwakwaka’wakw indigenous heritage.
“Spencer is a phenomenally strong and authentic person,” De Colling says. “She is incredibly authentic and genuine, and the bravest and most admirable thing about her is she never would answer a question without being true to herself. She always stayed true to what was in her heart with every question and every thought.”
Be moved. Be inspired. Don’t miss out.
Festival-goers are asked to wear masks, whether they are vaccinated or not, until seated and when they move through the facility. Tickets cost $18 per person and seating is general admission.
