Bay Film Series announces winter movie schedule | News, Sports, Jobs - Escanaba Daily Press

ESCANABA — The Bay Film Series marks its 21st year at Bay College celebrating the art of filmmaking by showing the best in international, documentary, and independent cinema. The college and Bay Film Series Coordinator and Instructor, Nanci Love, are excited to announce the release the film titles for winter 2022-2023.

“Streaming and lockdown have altered the landscape of what’s available for public showings. I’m happy to announce that movies are again available as we enter our ‘Race to the Oscars’ annual showcase,” says Nanci Love.

The first Oscar contender will show on December 8. TAR focuses on a German conductor and author as she navigates the currents of art, power, creativity, and consequences. Star Cate Blanchett is the odds-on favorite for the Best Actress category (Gold Derby). James Berardinelli of ReelViews says the film “possesses an emotional and intellectual honesty that makes it seem more real than countless made-for-mass-consumption biopics.” The Detroit News called it “stark and shattering work.”

On January 26, the Film Series will show She Said, a real-life journalistic thriller. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as the two New York Times reporters who broke Hollywood’s Harvey Weinstein scandal that lead to the #Metoo movement. Movie Nation praises the film as “a thoroughly engrossing account of how one of the touchstone stories of our time came to light.” The film is favored as a Best Picture contender.

The February 16 movie title will be announced in 2023.

On March 2, the Film Series will collaborate with Bay College’s Diversity Committee to show the documentary Warrior Lawyers: Defenders of Sacred Justice, by Michigan filmmaker Audrey Geyer. More information will be announced closer to the screening of this important work.

Women Talking is scheduled for April 13, another film highly favored on Gold Derby for getting a Best Picture nomination. As described on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is about women who question “Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith.”

All Bay Film Series movies are shown in Bay College’s Besse Center Theater at 7 p.m. in Escanaba. Tickets are available at the Box Office or can be purchased online. K-Bay Students can purchase tickets at a reduced admission. Tickets must be purchased in person to receive discount.
