You know a film is over-the-top when even Nicolas Cage is taken aback. The actor says Prisoners of the Ghostland “might be the wildest movie [he’s] ever made,” and not just because he spends most of his screen time wearing a skin-tight leather jumpsuit. Helmed by Japanese auteur Sion Sono, the post-apocalyptic thriller stars Cage as a criminal named Hero tasked with retrieving the governor’s granddaughter from a nuclear hell-scape known as the Ghostland. As an added initiative, Hero’s aforementioned jumpsuit has grenades attached to various body parts that will detonate if he doesn’t complete the mission on time.

Judas and the Black Messiah
Starring Daniel Kaluuya as the former Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton, the politically charged biopic has emerged as a last-minute frontrunner in several key Oscar categories. Premiering at Sundance ahead of a streaming release on HBO Max later next month, Judas and the Black Messiah is based on the real-life story of William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), a criminal who agreed to work as an FBI informant and infiltrate the Panthers to take down Hampton. Expect nominations for Kaluuya and Stanfield as well as first-time writer-director Shaka King, whose searing portrait of racial tensions in ‘60s America couldn’t feel more attuned to the current moment.

A celebration of Moreno’s top-star status as well as an exploration of the racial biases she overcame along the way, Mariem Pérez Riera’s documentary traces one of the most exceptional careers in entertainment.
