Other highlights include world premieres of documentaries about Anthony Bourdain and Rick James.
The 2021 Tribeca Film Festival has revealed its feature-film lineup, highlights of which include the world premiere of Hulu's Ilana Glazer starrer False Positive and the New York premiere of Sony's based-on-a-true-story, Depression-era football drama 12 Mighty Orphans.
The lineup for the festival, which is set to take place in person across New York City from June 9 to 20, includes 66 films — from a record 11,222 total submissions from 23 different countries — including 56 world premieres, four North American premieres, four New York premieres, one U.S. premiere and one international premiere. More than 60 percent of the feature films in this year's slate are directed by female, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ filmmakers.
“After a year of closed cinemas, canceled gatherings, and virtual everything, it is with joy and hope that we finally invite New Yorkers out of their homes and back to the movies," Tribeca Festival director and vice president of programming, Cara Cusumano, said in a statement. "Immersed in the city itself, Tribeca 2021 will bring once-in-a-lifetime big-screen experiences to filmmakers and audiences alike as we reconnect, re-imagine, and reopen through the shared experience of film."
False Positive, directed by John Lee from a script by Lee and Glazer, follows a couple struggling to conceive who seem to have found their savior in a celebrated reproductive specialist before they spiral into suspicion. Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan and Sophia Bush round out the cast.
12 Mighty Orphans, directed by Ty Roberts, explores the true story of the Mighty Mites, a Fort Worth orphanage football team who went from playing without equipment to playing for the Texas state championship, inspiring others during the Great Depression. Luke Wilson, Vinessa Shaw, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall and Wayne Knight star.
Other notable titles set to screen as part of the Tribeca Festival include Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones' How It Ends, a post-apocalyptic comedy filmed during the 2020 quarantine, the cast of which includes Olivia Wilde, Fred Armisen, Helen Hunt, Lamorne Morris and Nick Kroll; the world premiere of Vanessa Kirby starrer Italian Studies, the world premiere of Ted Bundy jailhouse interview film No Man of God, starring Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby; and the world premieres of documentaries about Anthony Bourdain, Rick James, the NRA, A$AP Rocky and Wolfgang Puck.
The festival will also feature special, curated Juneteenth programming highlighted throughout different verticals, celebrating voices from the African diaspora, with special emphasis on African American artists, performers, filmmakers and creators across disciplines.
Many films will be available for U.S. audiences to view online the day after they premiere on the Tribeca at Home virtual hub.
It was previously announced that the festival would open with the world premiere of Warner Bros.' film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning Broadway musical In the Heights.
