Upstate Films announces roving outdoor film series this summer - Times Union

A roving outdoor film and performance series will be coming soon to the Catskills and Hudson Valley.

Upstate Films, an independent movie theater based out of Rhinebeck, will debut the Hudson Valley Picture Show, a combination of live entertainment and film screenings, throughout the region this summer and early fall.

“The idea is to create a narrative of hope and renewal as we come out of the pandemic,” said new co-executive director Paul Sturtz. “All of these events will be held under the stars and it will be a variety show of sorts.”

The outdoor screenings will launch under Upstate Films' new leadership. Founders Steve and DeDe Leiber retired after 49 years, and the company is now led by its new co-executive directors Sturtz and Jason Silverman, who only just moved to the Hudson Valley last winter. Additionally, Upstate Films has parted ways with its Woodstock cinema on Tinker Street after 10 years, committing to just its Rhinebeck location for now.

For its new summer series, Upstate Films will use a state-of-the-art outdoor projection system, which includes a 24-foot screen, an ultra-bright projector and powerful sound system, to screen films ranging from the 1981 horror classic “An American Werewolf in London” to a soon-to-be-announced Janis Joplin special.

Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, Opus 40, the Bearsville Center, the Omega Institute, the City of Kingston and Bard College are a few of the institutions and places that Upstate Films has partnered with to produce the series.

The first event takes place at Saugerties’ Opus 40 on July 10.  Each showing will feature not just a movie, but live entertainment such as music, poetry, dance and conversation, and presentations from local not-for-profit organizations. Del’s Roadside, from Rhinebeck, will take its food truck to each location to dish out summer favorites like burgers, hot dogs, special sandwiches and ice cream.

The series will run until October 16 and hop to different locations on both sides of the river, but will stay in Dutchess, Ulster and Columbia counties. Right now, Upstate Films imagines a minimum of 15 events throughout the summer, but Sturtz says he “wouldn’t be surprised if some nights of spontaneous projection emerge too.” In August, there will also be a series of four screenings on Thursday nights.

The ticket price for each event will be $15 and $10 for Upstate Films members. A portion of those proceeds will go towards Red Hook Responds, Rhinebeck Responds, Family of Woodstock or Family of Kingston. Sturtz said tickets will be available for purchase by mid-May.

“Both Upstate Films and Del’s Roadside were very dedicated to the idea of supporting people who are in need during this time especially,” said Sturtz. “We love the idea of helping these efforts. There are a lot of people who have had a hard time in the last year. We think we can play a valuable role in raising funds for people who are less fortunate and hit by this pandemic hard.”

If you aren’t able to catch a film in-person this summer or fall, Upstate Films also offers virtual cinema online. The theater is also currently available to be rented out to small parties to view the Oscar-nominated titles “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Nomadland,” “Minari” and “Wolfwalkers.”
