The 15th annual Dallas International Film Festival returns in person this year beginning on October 8, 2021. But instead of its usual week-long event, the festival will condense things down to a three-day weekend run. And though the length may be shorter, the caliber of films is just as exciting. From Wes Anderson’s newest movie to a Joaquin Pheonix role that made waves at Telluride, these are our top five must-see films showing at the Dallas International Film Festival.
All will screen at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Cedars.
The French Dispatch
At 7 pm on opening night, director Wes Anderson’s newest film starring Timothée Chalamet, Léa Seydoux, and Adrien Brody will kick off the festival. The French Dispatch “brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictional 20th-century French city.” Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and more round out a star-filled cast.
The Humans
Showing at 9:15 pm on Saturday, The Humans follows the story of three generations of a Pennsylvania family as they celebrate Thanksgiving. Directed by Stephen Karam, the film is based on his one-act play of the same name. Starring Richard Jenkins, Amy Schumer, Beanie Feldstein, and Steven Yeun, this movie explores the deepest fears and dread of a family, as well as the love that exists between them.
C’mon C’mon
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, this drama explores the relationship between a radio journalist, Johnny (Phoenix), and his young nephew (Woody Norman) after they are unexpectedly set off on a cross-country trip. Directed by Mike Mills, the entire movie is in black-and-white and features music by Aaron and Bryce Dessner.
Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America
The only documentary in the “Premiere Series” category at the Dallas International Film Festival, Who We Are is “former ACLU Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson’s groundbreaking talk on the history of U.S. anti-Black racism.” The film is “interwoven with archival footage, interviews, and Robinson’s story, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it.”
Jockey
Directed by Clint Bentley, this drama film follows aging jockey Jackson Silva (played by Clifton Collins Jr.) as he is forced to confront the limitations of his body as he trains for his final championship in the equestrian circuit. The film also stars Molly Parker as his longtime trainer and friend.
