Louis C.K. Returns to Film in ‘Fourth of July’ Trailer - Vanity Fair

The disgraced comedian cowrote and directed the indie film about a recovering alcoholic confronting his family.

Ready or not, Louis C.K. is making his way back to the silver screen. On Friday, the trailer dropped for Fourth of July, an indie film cowritten and directed by the controversial comedian.

In 2017, multiple women accused the veteran comic of sexual misconduct, saying that he had masturbated—or had asked to do so—in front of them. Several of the accusers were aspiring comedians themselves. Eventually, C.K. admitted to the misconduct, saying, “These stories are true. At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true.”

The allegations coincided with the burgeoning #MeToo movement which saw multiple men in Hollywood, like C.K., Harvey Weinstein, and Bill Cosby, face repercussions for alleged sexual misconduct. (Both Weinstein and Cosby have denied all allegations of wrongdoing.) After these allegations, C.K.’s Emmy-winning FX series, Louie, was put on an extended hiatus, and networks and streamers like FX, HBO, Netflix, distanced themselves from him. He was also dropped by his management team at 3 Arts Entertainment, his APA agency, and his publicist Lewis Kay.

Despite being “canceled,” C.K. has remained gainfully employed. In 2021, he embarked on a 24-city comeback tour, playing to crowds in New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, San Diego, and Philadelphia, among other cities. He released a stand-up special, Sorry, in 2021 on his personal website. In 2022, he won a Grammy for best comedy album for Sincerely Louis CK, in which he jokes about his cancellation.

And in July, he’ll star in Fourth of July. The film, which C.K. cowrote with comedian Joe List, stars List as a newly sober jazz pianist who returns home to Maine for the Fourth of July to confront his family about his trauma. It also stars Sarah Tollemache, Paula Plum, Robert Walsh, and Robert Kelly. From the trailer, C.K. appears to play List’s therapist.

Fourth of July opens in theaters on July 1.
