CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted lots of events in our area and that includes what's considered the longest student-run film festival in the country.
The Big Muddy Film Festival began Wednesday evening and this year, organizers are inviting viewers to watch the selected films virtually.
Originally, organizers were thinking of showing the films at a drive-through, but in the end, they decided to go the online route.
The 43rd annual Big Muddy Film Festival kicked off Wednesday evening. Amidst the pandemic, SIU Carbondale is taking on a new approach.
"This year, doing an online, virtual presentation, we have an audience that could potentially be the entire United States," said Tyler Horn, Student Director of Big Muddy Film Festival.
For 2021, the festival will virtually debut 82 hand-picked films from all over the world.
"We try and select films that we believe will have a residence to the experience of people in Southern Illinois. Like a mirror of life elsewhere that reflects the life of people experience here," said Sarah Lewison, Faculty Advisor with the Big Muddy Film Festival.
Horn added, "It's also a really great chance for independent and struggling artists to have an outlet to tell their stories and we are really happy to provide that platform for them."
Another part of the festival tradition is to invite experts in the industry to review and rate films.
"They jury the winners, so we don't do that, we give that to somebody and then every year they make a presentation to us about their work and about their experiences," said Lewison.
Big Muddy Film Festival will run until Sunday, March 31.
