The Balkan war drama Quo Vadis, Aida? by director Jasmila Žbanić picked up the top jury prize and the critics award at the 38th edition of the Miami Film Festival, which handed out trophies on Sunday.

The film about the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica as seen through the eyes of a courageous UN interpreter, Aida, earned the juried Knight MARIMBAS Award. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s shortlisted entry for the Academy Awards also won this year’s Rene Rodriguez Critics Award.

Neon's Super LTD boutique label acquired the North American rights to Quo Vadis, Aida?, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

In other prize giving, Cuban Dancer, a documentary co-production from Italy, Canada and Chile and director Roberto Salinas, won the Knight Made in MIA Feature Film Award. And Lorelei, a working-class fable directed by Sabrina Doyle, earned the best first feature award, while Henry Rincón's The City of Wild Beasts from Colombia picked up the Ibero-American Feature Film Award.

Elsewhere, The Present, directed by Farah Nabulsi, took the best short film award.

The Miami Film Festival staged a hybrid 2021 edition from March 5-14 with physical theater and online screenings amid the pandemic. The festival opened with an in-theater world premiere of Edson Jean’s Ludi — about a hardworking and exhausted nurse chasing the American Dream in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood — and closed with the debut of Jayme Gershen’s Birthright.

Around 100 feature dramas, documentaries and short films from 40 countries played during this year's festival.
