Elizabethton High School juniors Jackson Clavier, Hayden Culbert, Adam Hughes, and Legend Luttrell won two awards at the 52-Film Fest competition.

They received the awards Overall Best Use of Element Dialogue and Best High School Film, beating Dobyns-Bennett, West Ridge, and University high schools in the competition hosted by East Tennessee State University’s Media and Communication Department, the Wallace Theatre, and ActionVFX.

Teams had 52 hours to produce a 5:20 minute long film within certain unique guidelines and challenges.

In their film, the EHS students were challenged to include a number two pencil as a prop, shoot a scene at a public art display located in Johnson City, and incorporate the dialogue line “That’s not how I would do it” into their submission.

The EHS team members, who were seeking to publicize their names, gain field experience, and hang out with each other, decided to film a crime drama, predominantly for the uniqueness to hopefully set itself up for something further in the future.

Clavier and Culbert collaborated on most of the directing, cinematography, and editing, while the writing process was more of a group effort.

Luttrell was the main actor while Hughes was entertainingly dragged into the project.

“I wanted to act. When Jackson asked me if I could drive out to Johnson City at nine at night and dress like a dad since they were missing a scene, I said ‘absolutely’, “Hughes said.

When asked about his film inspirations, Clavier describes his appreciation for different writing and directing techniques. “I like the writing of Quentin Tarantino because of how natural it sounds with pop culture references, and I like the directing style of Alfred Hitchcock,” Clavier said.

Clavier and Hughes desire to pursue filmmaking and acting in college, but Luttrell has other passions as well.

“It’s fifty-fifty for me. I love acting, but I also really love to cook. I don’t really know what direction to go in, but I’m passionate about both,” he said.
