Films We're Looking Forward To At TIFF - AMC Scene

For nearly 50 years, the Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, has earned a reputation for being not only one of the most popular movie events of the year, but also one of the most important. Over the years, future Academy Award® winners have either premiered or found audiences at the festival.

There are many films set to screen at TIFF this year, and some are especially exciting. AMC Theatres is here to take you on a crash course of some of the films we’re anticipating that are set to screen at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival come September.

The Woman King

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s THE WOMAN KING centers on the all-female group of warriors charged with protecting the kingdom of Dahomey in early 19th-century Africa. Led by the fearless general Nansica (Viola Davis), this unorthodox yet incredibly skilled force set out to protect their people from the arriving colonizers who aim to take them from their land and set up their own civilizations in their place.

Prince-Bythewood’s first film since the 2020 acton flick THE OLD GUARD features a cast that also includes Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega as King Ghezo, the leader of the Dahomey kingdom.

The Menu

After spending more than a decade working on shows like “Succession” and “Game of Thrones,” Mark Mylod has returned to the world of cinema with THE MENU, a new horror comedy centering on a celebrated chef who provides his guests with a rather unorthodox fine-dining experience.

The movie sees Ralph Fiennes star as the peculiar culinary artist Chef Slowik, who prepares a night that will not soon be forgotten by his various guests, including Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), a young couple who have come a long way to see the iconic figure’s process.

Empire Of Light

Sam Mendes has spent the past decade directing massive action spectacles like SKYFALL, SPECTRE, and the Academy Award-winning military thrill-ride 1917, but the acclaimed filmmaker will soon return to a more dramatic pacing with the upcoming EMPIRE OF LIGHT. The movie, which stars Olivia Colman and Michael Ward, will aim to enchant audiences with a sweeping story of romance and cinema in 1980s England.

Mendes will also reunite once more with cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won an Oscar for his work on 1917 as well as one for his accomplishments with Denis Villeneuve’s BLADE RUNNER 2049. Other members of the EMPIRE OF LIGHT cast include Colin Firth, Toby Jones, and Tom Brooke.

Devotion

J.D. Dillard has tackled the superhero genre with SLEIGHT and the world of survival horror with SWEETHEART, and now the up-and-coming filmmaker has set his sights on the realm of epic military dramas with DEVOTION. The upcoming movie features Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell as two U.S. Navy pilots who become close friends and comrades in the heat of battle during the Korean War.

The latest in a long line of military movies based on true stories and real-life heroes, DEVOTION also stars Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas, Thomas Sadoski, Sarinda Swan, and multiple others.

DEVOTION

The Whale

Darren Aronofsky is no stranger to character studies, with movies like REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and THE WRESTLER focusing on different aspects of the human condition. It appears the talented filmmaker will do it once more with the upcoming release of THE WHALE, which follows Charlie (Brendan Fraser), a man coping with obesity who is attempting to reconnect with his teenage daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink), years after abandoning her.

Based on Samuel D. Hunter’s play of the same name, THE WHALE will also see performances by Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins.

The Son

With their teenage son in the middle of a severe mental health crisis, a father (Hugh Jackman) and mother (Laura Dern) struggle to find a way to provide support and see him through the storm in Florian Zeller’s THE SON.

Anthony Hopkins is also set to appear in THE SON, playing the same character he previously played in Zeller’s 2020 Academy Award-winning drama THE FATHER.

The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg has long inserted his own personality and upbringing into his body of work with the likes of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, E.T. THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL, and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, but the decorated director is preparing to release what could very well be his most personal film yet.

In September, TIFF attendees will get to feast their eyes on one of the most anticipated films of the year: THE FABELMANS. Based on Spielberg’s own upbringing, the coming-of-age drama centers on a young boy living in post-World War II Arizona named Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) as he falls in love with cinema and begins his journey to becoming a filmmaker. Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Julia Butters also star.

These are just some of the movies showing at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. If you can’t make it up to the Great North in September, don’t worry as you’ll soon be able to see movies like this when they arrive in AMC Theatres nationwide.
