Take Two: The Fall Film Festivals' Must-See Movies From Venice To Telluride To Toronto To New York - Deadline

Editor’s note: Deadline presents the 30th episode of its video series Take Two (formerly known as Two Shot), in which Pete Hammond and Todd McCarthy tackle the artistry of films. Each has reviewed and written about the craft for decades and built a remarkable breadth of knowledge of films past and present. What we hoped for when we asked them to do this was a concise, mature and thoughtful conversation comparable to what we saw from Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.

‘Tis the season, or at least the season film critics care about the most. It begins Wednesday with the opening of the Venice Film Festival, two days later the Telluride Film Festival, and one week later the Toronto Film Festival, followed later in the month by the New York Film Festival. It is indeed the time when we start to get the “serious” movies. We define “serious” as being those films that are also likely Oscar contenders, or at least on paper seem to have those ambitions. And even though the actual festivals where many of the season’s most prominent awards hopefuls will be spotlighted start in person this week, over the past few weeks we have been seeing a large chunk of what is in store for festgoers and movie fans this fall.

Even though we can’t review them until they have their official premieres, we can certainly talk about what we are most excited to see and write about in the days ahead. The fun thing about this time of year is even though we have a good idea of what to anticipate from the likes of Alejandro G. Iñárritu, with his first feature in seven years since winning back-to-back Oscars, or from Todd Field, whose anticipated Tár represents his first movie in 16 years, or from Darren Aronofsky, whose The Whale could mean a major comeback for star Brendan Fraser, or from Sam Mendes, who is back with the promising Empire Of Light, or Steven Spielberg with perhaps his most personal film yet in The Fabelmans? The list goes on and on, with new movies from Noah Baumbach, Florian Zeller, Luca Guadagnino, Peter Farrelly (with his first since winning the Oscar for Green Book), Sarah Polley and countless others.

Hammond has been Deadline’s Awards Columnist for the past decade, covering what now seemingly is the year-round Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline’s Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Hammond also hosts KCET Cinema Series and the station’s weekly series Must See Movies.

McCarthy is a veteran trade publication film critic, columnist and reporter who has also written several acclaimed books and documentary films. He served two stints on the staffs of Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and extensively covered film festivals internationally for both publications. His film Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography won the best documentary prizes from the New York Film Critics and National Society of Film Critics associations, and he won an Emmy for writing the documentary Preston Sturges: The Rise and Fall of an American Dreamer. He also directed the documentaries Man of Cinema: Pierre Rissient and Forever Hollywood.
