Downtown Grantville is redecorated to look like the 1800s for the production of "The Color Purple."

Main Street in Grantville will be closed to film scenes for the production of "The Color Purple."

The production crew began placing dirt on Main Street on Thursday to decorate downtown Grantville for a scene set in the 1800s.

According to assistant police chief Cliff Schriefer, the set decoration should be completed by Monday, April 11.

Because of the filming, Main Street will be closed. Schriefer suggested that Grantville residents avoid Main Street and portions of every adjoining road.

Filming dates will be April 11-14 and April 18-22. Filming should complete by 10 p.m. most nights, except for April 13, 14 and 20, which will be completed before midnight.

Schriefer said the dirt will be removed from the road on Thursday, April 14 after filming, but production will continue on the road the following week, for another scene set in the 1920s.

Most school bus routes will be marginally affected, according to Schriefer.

However, students who are dropped off on Moreland Street will be dropped off on LaGrange Street instead, Schriefer said, because the bus will not be able to turn around on the street.

At a January city council meeting, Trevell Blake, location manager for the film, said detours will be set up to help residents navigate around the production, and the roads will remain open for emergency vehicles.

After filming is complete, Blake said the film crew will be taking down their sets from April 25 to May 6.

The city of Grantville will receive $1,000 per day for the production, and the money will be placed in the city's general fund. Preparations for "The Color Purple," began on Feb. 28.

After the completion of "The Color Purple," a Marvel Studios television production will begin preparation in Grantville in early May.
