Montclair Film is partnering with Out Montclair for "Celebrating Pride," a film program exploring LGBTQIA+ storytelling. The eighteen-film program will launch on May 6 and culminate on June 11 during the first-ever Montclair Pride festival.
Screenings will take place at The Clairidge, Montclair Film’s non-profit six-screen arthouse cinema. A special free community screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring a live floor show performance by The Ordinary Kids, will additionally take place outdoors at Lackawanna Plaza on Friday June 3, at 7:30 p.m. A special presentation of "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" will be at the Clairidge on Saturday, June 11. Film information, tickets, and showtimes for all films can be found at theclairidge.org.
"For decades now, film and the arts have helped break the stigma of being LGBTQIA+ in this world by giving people connection to stories they can relate to and, by extension, affirmation. With everything happening in the world today, it's as important now as ever before that our stories continue to be told, not just for our own affirmation but so that allyship and relatability to who we are continues to improve," Out Montclair President Peter Yacobellis said in an announcement from Montclair Film. "Out Montclair is thankful to and proud to partner with Montclair Film on this incredible five-week showcase of LGBTQIA+ people and their stories, through the power of film," he added.
Yacobellis is additionally a member of the Montclair Township council.
“Montclair Film is excited to partner with Out Montclair to present a diverse program of films that speak to the wonderful range of experience and expression in LGBTQIA+ cinema,” Beth Gottung, Montclair Film executive director and co-head, said in the announcement. “The entire organization is looking forward to welcoming our community to the movies as we join together for Montclair’s first-ever Pride celebration.”
